Rapid Examination and Assessment for Child Health in Houston's East End Community
Executive Summary
Background and Methods
In order to enhance understanding of child health status in the East End area of Houston, the St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities (SLEHC) and the University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) initiated a two-phased community research project to gather primary data concerning child health problems and needs.
The purpose of this project was to assist SLEHC in determining future funding priorities in the area and to assist East End health and social service agencies in documenting both the needs and the assets present in their community.
Phase One of Project REACH began in Fall 1999. It used a participatory action research design to involve community residents in discussion, analysis and documentation to assess child health and well being. This Participatory Health Assessment Report was published in July, 2000. All sections of the report are in Adobe®

Phase Two followed in Fall 2000 with a household survey using a rapid cluster sampling method developed by the World Health Organization. The survey was directed by Beatrice J. Selwyn, ScD, Associate Professor of Epidemiology, UTSPH, an expert in rapid epidemiologic assessment methods.
